Eudald Serra i Güell, a visionary sculptor and ethnologist, made his mark in 1911 and left an enduring legacy until his passing in 2002. As a pivotal surrealist sculptor, he played a key role in shaping the post-war Catalan artistic avant-garde as a member of the ADLAN group (Amics de l'Art Nou, Friends of New Art). Trained at Llotja Arts and Crafts School in Barcelona under the guidance of Àngel Ferrant, Serra embarked on a journey that would take him to Japan in 1935. There, he collaborated with renowned ceramicist Hamada Shoji, delving into the world of ceramics. Throughout his career, Serra's talent earned him numerous accolades and exhibitions, solidifying his reputation as a leading figure in the art world. His passion for cultures was ignited during a trip to Hokkaido Island in 1947, where he worked at the service of the United States army. This experience sparked an interest in modeling busts of the island's original inhabitants, a pursuit he termed artistic anthropology. In 1949, upon his return to Barcelona, Serra forged a lasting connection with August Panyella and Albert Folch, collaborating closely with both artists. He worked alongside ceramist Llorenç Artigas and became part of the Altamira School avant-garde group, ultimately winning the Prize for Sculpture at the 1st Hispano-American Biennial of Art in 1952. Serra's work can be found throughout Barcelona's public spaces, various museums, and on the façade of the Ethnological Museum of Barcelona building. He also shared his expertise as a teacher, although he eventually stepped down to assume responsibility for Albert Folch's collections as conservator. Through his collaborations with Panyella and Folch, Serra embarked on numerous expeditions, acquiring objects for the museum's holdings funded by Barcelona City Council. He played a crucial role in planning and preparing for these trips, often traveling ahead to select and purchase artifacts. His approach was guided by artistic experience rather than strict anthropology or ethnography. Serra published several works, some in collaboration with Folch. Following Albert Folch's passing, he was appointed director of the Folch Foundation, cementing his legacy as a pioneering figure in the art world.
