The Kongō class of guided missile destroyers in the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force is equipped with the Aegis Combat System, making them the first ship classes outside the United States to possess that capability. Following a decision made in December 2003, Japan chose to upgrade their Kongo-class destroyers with the Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense System. The upgrade involves a series of installations and flight tests scheduled from 2007 through 2010. JS Kongo was the first ship to have the BMD upgrade installed. The destroyer is armed with RIM-66 SM-2MR block II surface-to-air missiles and RGM-84 Harpoon anti-ship missiles. The mk41 strike length vertical-launching system (VLS) can carry a total of 90 SM-2MR missiles, with 21 housed in the bow cells and 61 in the aft cells of the VLS.
