In the animated film Princess Mononoke, kodama are depicted as small, white humanoids with large, rattling heads and mask-like features similar to bobbleheads. They seem to gather around a felled sapling when San chops it down in one scene. At the climactic moment when the trees start dying, kodama appear falling from the air before dissolving into dust on the ground. As new life erupts at the forest's revival, a lone Kodama emerges from the underbrush.
