Kobra Go Direct Drive Mod
prusaprinters
A mod to adapt your Kobra Go Bowden to a more Direct Drive set up. Please read threw before taking anything apart! It's a little difficult to print nicely with no real large flat spots but with supports its defiantly doable. I printed with the large tapered holes facing the build plate with lots of supports, worked for me but you may have better results in different orientations. The two 3mm holes above the large tapered holes are for extra mounting bolts to really stiffen the mount up. Sometimes they can get in the way of your other attachments so you can run without these extra 3mm bolts in place but they are recommended for extra support so it doesn't eventually start moving around after long use. All the original mounting bolts from the stepper motor will work with this mod for mounting the stepper motor. Needed: 8mm drill bit to drill out the large tapered holed for the wheel spacers to fit threw. 3mm drill bit too drill the smaller 2 holes. X2 M3X12mm Bolts with washers and nuts. A small section of 1.75mm tubing to cut to length (measuring instructions below) I added a very long section of tube from the stepper motor to my filament guide to stop any directional yanking on the head unit as well. A 6pin stepper motor cable extender about 16inches or just solder in some extra wire to lengthen the stepper motor cable. (I went the solder route and added about 16inches of length, please measure the length yourself) Measuring the 1.75mm tube: Before taking anything apart, even the tube lock tabs. I drew lines on the installed tube at the end of each connectors so I could measure the full depth inserted. Then after installing the stepper motor onto the installed direct drive mount I measured the distance between the stepper motor tube connector to the hot-end tube connector with lock tabs on. Cut a different piece of tube to the combined measured length (in-case you need to go back to the bowden setup) uninstall the stepper motor's filament gear housing and installed the tube into the hot-end before sliding the stepper motor's filament gear housing back into place with the tube at the same time. (Don't forget the lock tabs!) Everyone's printer is different and having the tube fully inserted to depth is important. Installation: Make sure the Printer is off! After printing the Direct Drive Mod drill out the two large tapered holes with the 8mm drill bit, as straight as possible. Draw the lines on the bowden tube for connector depth measurement as stated before. Loosen the hot-end plate's lower tension nut and remove the top 2 wheels, spacers and bolts. Install the spacers into the direct Drive Mods drilled out 8mm tapered holes. Then bolt it all back together with the mod on the spacers. Tighten the tension nut to remove play as per factory instructions. Then you can drill out the two 3mm holes from the front to get them aligned perfectly. Install the two M3x12mm bolts with the washers and nuts on the backside. Remove the stepper motor and filament gear housing from the original location and re-install onto the Direct Drive Mod with the tube connector facing the hot-end's tube connector. (this is where you measure as stated before for the tube length) Uninstall the stepper motor's filament gear housing to install the cut tube onto the hot-end (don't forget the lock tab) then reinstall the stepper motor's filament gear housing while sliding in the tube. Snug up the stepper motor bolts and install the lock tab. Now add in the stepper motor cable extender or solder in some extra wire, plug in the stepper motor, power cycle the printer and you should be all go to go. Don't forget to change your Retraction Settings! These instructions are as best as I can remember and please use caution and your own judgment.
