The Knox-class design originated from a modified Brooke-class frigate intended to increase range without a long-range missile system. The ships measure 438 feet (133.5 meters) in length, 47 feet (14.3 meters) in beam and have a draft of 25 feet (7.6 meters). They displace 4,066 tons at full load, crewed by 13 officers and 211 enlisted men. The ships were equipped with one Westinghouse geared steam turbine driving the single propeller shaft. The turbine was designed to produce 35,000 horsepower using steam from two C-E boilers to reach a speed of 27 knots (50 kilometers per hour; 31 miles per hour). The Knox class has a range of 4,500 nautical miles at a speed of 20 knots. The Knox-class ships are armed with a 5-inch caliber Mark 42 gun forward and a single 3-inch caliber gun aft. They feature an eight-round ASROC launcher between the guns and the bridge. Close-range anti-submarine defense is provided by two twin torpedo tubes, each firing 12.75-inch torpedoes. The ships are equipped with a DASH drone helicopter; its hangar and landing pad are positioned amidships, just aft of the mast. Beginning in the 1970s, the DASH was replaced by a SH-2 Seasprite LAMPS I helicopter and the hangar and deck were enlarged accordingly. The USS Doris Miller FF-1091 is one such ship, with its Phalanx system removed to accommodate a towed SQS-35 sonar system.
