Bonn Square, Oxford The city of Bonn gifted Oxford a commission to symbolize the bond between two University Cities. Two stacks of books stand proudly, representing the ties that unite them. Oxford was the first city to reach out to a German city after the war, forging a path for friendship and mutual understanding. This spirit is reflected in the titles on the bronze books: Knowledge, Understanding, Friendship, Trust, Wissen, Verständigung, Freundschaft, Vertrauen. The bronze sculptures are crafted from real books, with the largest standing 1.2 meters tall. Smaller stacks sit atop benches throughout the square, inviting the public to engage with the artwork. The intention is for passersby to interact with the sculpture, sparking meaningful connections. Oxford's mayor hopes the installation conveys a timeless message: that as people learn more about each other, they can begin to understand and eventually work together in harmony.
