The Knowe of Yarso is a well-preserved chambered cairn situated on the island of Rousay, within the Orkney archipelago. This remarkable structure falls under the category of 'Orkney-Cromarty' cairns, which served as communal burial sites during the Neolithic period. Its central chamber is cleverly divided into stalls or compartments by three pairs of vertical stone slabs, making it accessible through a single entrance passage at one end. The entire structure is enclosed within a rectangular cairn featuring diagonally-sloping outer stonework, giving it a unique and distinctive appearance. Strategically located on the edge of a natural terrace on the south side of the island, the Knowe of Yarso stands proudly 100m above sea level. In 1934, archaeologists Callander and Grant conducted an excavation at the site, uncovering the remains of over 29 individuals and 36 red deer. The chamber also yielded numerous stone tools, pottery shards, and arrowheads, providing valuable insights into the lives of our ancestors. To protect this ancient wonder, a modern concrete dome was installed in 1938. Today, the Knowe of Yarso is under the care of Historic Environment Scotland (HES), ensuring its preservation for future generations. The site is open to the public and free to visit, making it an ideal destination for history enthusiasts and those seeking to explore Scotland's rich cultural heritage.
