Knob with Encased Hex Nut

Knob with Encased Hex Nut

This is a versatile knob designed to encase a 1/4" hex nut and create a threaded knob for use on a threaded stud. It can be used in a variety of applications where you need a hand-secureable knob on a carriage bolt or threaded rod. The nut is inserted into the knob during the print run, requiring some calculation and attention to timing. You can watch and pause the print when it has printed the last layer that makes up the hex recess. With 0.4mm layers, this typically occurs after approximately the 25th layer. It's designed for a 1/4-20 nut but could also be used with a 6M nut if printed at about 95% scale. While untested, it should work with various nut diameters by adjusting the print size. To use: Start printing the knob. Pause the print at the correct time. Insert the hex nut into the recess. Resume printing. The plastic may not stick to the nut initially, but it usually corrects itself after a few layers. You might need to ream the plastic hole with a 1/4" drill to clean out any threads that didn't stick to the nut.
