This is a straightforward approach to what people now call looping. You can accomplish it with basic elastic thread or yarn, or even small stretchy bands. Right now, the trend is using a looping board and rubber bands. I might design such a board myself soon, but it would require a specific size, which may not be ideal for my 3D printer.
