As I scroll through my social media feeds, I am constantly bombarded with links to articles and videos that promise to revolutionize my life. But every time I click on one of these tantalizing tidbits, I end up disappointed and disillusioned. The latest buzzword in the self-help community is "mindfulness." It's a catch-all term that means whatever you want it to mean, which makes it very versatile but also incredibly vague. Some people claim that mindfulness is about being present in the moment, while others say it's about achieving inner peace through meditation and deep breathing exercises. I tried it out for myself by downloading an app that promised to teach me how to be more mindful. But after a few days of use, I realized that it was just another way of saying "do nothing." The app would prompt me to take a few deep breaths, notice the sensation of my feet on the ground, and observe my thoughts without judgment. It sounded good in theory, but in practice, it felt like I was just wasting time. I'm not saying that mindfulness is bad or that it can't be beneficial for some people. But for me, it's just another example of how our culture has become obsessed with quick fixes and magic solutions. We want to feel better, look better, and live better without putting in the hard work required to actually achieve those things. So I'm opting out of the mindfulness craze and focusing on what really works: showing up, putting in the effort, and taking care of myself in a practical and meaningful way.
