I always carry a large kitchen knife with me on holiday. We usually rent apartments, like to cook local meals or make salads for lunch, and the kitchen equipment is often just basic. I don't blame landlords for not wanting nice stuff, it probably gets stolen. Before getting a 3D printer, I used to wrap my knife in layers of cardboard and tape to protect it. But now that's changed! This design fits the largest IKEA VÖRDA knife, about 21 cm long or 8 inches. The design is pretty simple: Knife shape, some angles, cutouts for material savings. The part snaps together in two halves. Getting the knife's shape into CAD was a bit tricky. I chose a straightforward method, but it had its challenges. Here's how I did it: Draw the outline of your knife on paper with a thin black marker. Be as precise as possible and add a reference line next to it, about 100 mm long. This will help you check the scale later. Scan the paper, using a 2-bit scan or convert it afterwards. Create a dxf file from the scanned image using a tool like Convert.io (there are offline tools too, but they often cost money). Import the dxf into your CAD program and pay attention to the scale. Use the reference line for reference. Build the 2D shape of your knife with lines and arcs, using the scanned dxf as a guide. I used a spline in one place, but it's not usually necessary. Print out the design at a 1:1 scale and compare it to your knife shape. Adjust until you have a good representation of your knife shape.
