The replica plaster was obtained in 1897 from a sculpture uncovered in 1884 at Emperor Nero's villa in Subiaco. The original work dates back to the 2nd Century BC and features an early Hellenistic style. It is believed that this sculpture may be one of several 'Niobide boys,' which are part of a larger group depicting dying children who met their demise at the hands of gods Apollo and Diana, as their mother Niobe had boasted of having more offspring than even the gods themselves. This incident exemplifies the concept of 'hybris,' or excessive pride, leading inevitably to its nemesis, the wrath of the divine.
