This period followed the devastating collapse of the Bronze Age in the Near East, setting the stage for the Early Iron Age to take hold there. The Greek Dark Ages persisted, having begun in 1200 BC. Meanwhile, the Neo-Assyrian Empire rose towards the end of the 10th century BC. In Iron Age India, the Vedic period continued unabated. In China, the Zhou Dynasty held power. The European Bronze Age rolled on with Urnfield culture thriving. Japan was home to a hunter-gatherer society that was evolving during the Jomon period.
