The positions of the arms and hands suggest that these two angels originally served as candleholders on either side of an altar. Candles were used during Mass to light up the altar and represent Christ as a beacon of light. They were acquired from the Palazzo Strozzi in Florence and likely originated from a church supported by the powerful Strozzi banking family.
