The positions of arms and hands reveal that these and their companion angel originally served as candle holders on either side of an altar. Candles lit during Mass illuminated the altar and evoked Christ's symbolism as light, highlighting the significance of illumination in religious rituals. Acquired from the Palazzo Strozzi in Florence, they likely originated from a church sponsored by the influential Strozzi family, renowned bankers.
