Francis Kittredge arrived in Santa Cruz in 1849 as a doctor. He took on a role managing the wharf while living there. Ruel Kittredge was a veteran of the Civil War. On March 7, 1863, the Santa Cruz Sentinel reported: "Ruel Kittridge was the only son universally respected and cherished by those who knew his value. Over a year ago he enlisted in the cavalry after catching a cold from exposure. The mild cold developed into consumption, and he lingered for many months until his death ended his early struggles. He was a kind-hearted courageous young man, and there are many who mourn his loss and deeply commiserate with his parents over their hardship." This artifact is examined by the Santa Cruz Museum of Art and History.
