During construction of the Northern Line, various parts of Antwerp's Spanish Wall were uncovered and archaeologically studied. The public was also highly interested: the monumental bridge over the city moat and its adjacent bastion on the Kipdorp site attracted no less than 11,000 visitors in one weekend! Kipdorp was one of the five gates to the city, built at the behest of Emperor Charles between 1543 and 1548. When French Fury attacked Antwerp on January 17, 1583, a fierce battle took place on the Kipdorp Bridge. The Kipdorp Bridge and part of the bastion and city wall will also remain visible in an outdoor site after the construction works are completed.
