The King Tiger is a German heavy tank of World War II. The final official German designation was Panzerkampfwagen Tiger Ausf. B, often shortened to Tiger B. It is also known as the Königstiger, which translates literally as Royal Tiger. Allied soldiers called it the King Tiger by mistake. The King Tiger replaced the Tiger I, combining its thick armor with the sloping armor used on the Panther tank. The tank weighed almost 70 tons and had 100 to 185 mm of armor in front. It was armed with a long-barreled 8.8 cm anti-tank cannon. The King Tiger chassis served as the basis for the Jagdtiger turretless anti-tank vehicle. It was issued to heavy tank battalions of the Army and Waffen-SS. The first unit to use it in combat was the 503rd Heavy Panzer Battalion during the Allied invasion of Normandy on July 11, 1944. The first Eastern Front unit equipped with the King Tiger was the 501st Heavy Panzer Battalion, which had 25 operational tanks by September 1, 1944.
