A testament to Middle Kingdom royal artistry, this statue of Twelfth Dynasty king Senwosret III embodies one central idea of this exhibit: the dynamic interplay between durability and flux. When an artist created this masterpiece, the seated posture had been an integral part of Egyptian tradition for more than eight centuries; most aspects of the regalia had been in use even longer. Nonetheless, the manner of carving—note Senwosret's emotive countenance—had only recently come into vogue, within a span of less than a generation.
