King George III John Van Nost Younger 1767, British Museum

The marble portrait of King George III boasts a signature and date on its back: 'From the Life by Jan Nost Sculp in 1767.' Born into the renowned Ost family of sculptors, John Nost the Younger was trained in London by Henry Scheemakers. He traveled to Dublin in 1749, where he spent most of his working life creating portrait busts and public monuments, such as a statue of George III for Dublin City Hall. His bust of famous actor-manager David Garrick was reproduced numerous times. Following Eva Garrick's death in 1822, the couple's country villa and London apartment were sold at auction in 1823. The sale included a bust described as 'V. Nost, 1764,' an early portrait of King George III.
