King George III

King George III

George III by Matthew Cotes Wyatt (1777-1862). 1836. Bronze on a 12'-high Portland stone base. George III was the first English monarch to be honored in this way through public subscription, rather than private gift. The monument was originally intended to be even more impressive, depicting the king in a triumphal chariot drawn by four horses. However, subscriptions fell short of expectations. It was also meant for Waterloo Place, where it would have been easier to appreciate, away from traffic and other distractions. A major issue arose, though: an article in Gentleman's Magazine pointed out that since the Duke of York (George III's second son, who passed away in 1827) was already commemorated at the front on a nearby column, this would have meant his back would be turned to his father. An alternative location was found instead. Cockspur Street is close by, located at the eastern end of Pall Mall. Matthew Wyatt was known for his equestrian sculptures, and George III's Arab horse, Adonis, looks suitably spirited. The king's features, below his neat riding-wig, are familiar from Johann Zoffany's famous portrait of George III.
