Kinetic Balance
thingiverse
Turned the butterflies into kinetic art by adding this ball and socket. Uses 3 feet of 3/16 brass rod from the local home center. Butterfly body has the same hole size. Works with both large and small butterflies. Supports needed to print the ball. Socket should be flipped 180 degrees - what is up now should be down. rod is bent 2 inches from end of shaft on top of the ball and 3 inches from the ends. socket has a hole for 1/4 20 bolt and is mounted on 1" copper pipe using a cast off part from a garden hose replacement end to provide a taper that fits snuggly in the pipe. Will update the socket with appropriate taper in the future. The only "Trick" to making this work for any application is to keep the weight below the center of the ball. Floats up and down and spins in the wind.
