Kinematic Coupling Demo - Degrees of Freedom

myminifactory

This model showcases a Kinematic Coupling, showcasing the concept of degrees of freedom in action. Two components are integrated - a base and a spider unit. When one sphere is seated in a groove, two translational degrees of freedom come into play. Adding another sphere increases this to four, with two rotational degrees joining the mix. Three spheres in place bring everything to a complete standstill. The mechanism stands up well under heat, as expansion affects all parts equally. It offers precise positioning every time and is commonly used for swapping low-force mechanisms and manipulators like CNC measurement probes and 3D printing head tool changers. FreeCAD files are included, ready for modification or adaptation.
