American expression Kilroy was here became popular during World War II, typically seen scrawled on walls by GIs in graffiti. Origins of this phrase are disputed, but it and its distinctive doodle came to be associated with soldiers in the 1940s: a bald-headed man (occasionally shown with a few hairs) peeking over a wall with his fingers grasping the wall, nose prominent.
