Kilcooley Abbey - Sheela-na-Gig
sketchfab
An obscure sheela-na-gig carving lies hidden at Kilcooley Abbey, Co. Tipperary. Although not documented in the National Monuments Service's official records, locals are well aware of its presence and have even captured it in stone by local craftsman Philip Quinn. It was Louise Nugent who first brought this enigmatic find to our attention, and Liam Noonan who confirmed its existence on site. This carving is a female figure, rendered in low relief. Her body is slender, but her facial features are indistinct - or at least they appear to be. Could those subtle markings be eyes, nose, and mouth? A left ear protrudes from the massive head, which sits atop a rectangular torso adorned with small, intricately carved breasts. The arms extend outward from the shoulders, bending at the elbows as they wrap under the legs, which are spread wide apart. The right leg is straight, with the foot pointed upward, while the left leg turns inward, its foot pointing in the same direction. A clear vulva is visible. A puzzling feature protrudes from the left elbow. Officially listed as early graffiti.
