Kid's Glasses Scratch Protector
thingiverse
When we discovered our 1-year-old needed glasses, we wanted the top-notch ones available from the optometrist. We got these "Kid's" by "Safilo" and they're clearly not designed for a 1-year-old with access to stone tile flooring. The glass sticks out past the frames! And the "scratch-proof" coating is easily damaged - it's child's play to cut through that. This protective frame snaps onto the front of these glasses, keeping the optics safe from flat-ish abrasive surfaces. While I'm sure a gravel walkway would still cause damage, with this protection you'll likely avoid new scratches on your kid's glasses for at least a day or two. I printed mine in blue but recommend transparent colors so it's less visually intrusive when wearing. Also, note that the tabs sit where my child's face is away from the frames - your child may vary. UPDATE: I upgraded to a newer version (mk6). I removed the inner tabs since they snapped off easily without affecting performance. The outer tabs are wider and stronger but fit tighter than before. The newer version doesn't stick out over the nose bridge like the original, which required some light sanding for comfort.
