The khukuri, or kukri, is a versatile knife originating from the Indian subcontinent, closely tied to the Nepali-speaking communities of Nepal and India. Its distinctive recurved blade sets it apart from other knives. For centuries, the khukuri has served as both a tool and a weapon in the region. Traditionally, it was, and remains in many cases, the go-to utility knife for the Gurkha people. The khukuri is an iconic symbol of the Nepalese Army, the Royal Gurkha Rifles of the British Army, the Assam Rifles, the Assam Regiment, the Garhwal Rifles, the Gorkha regiments of the Indian Army, and all Gurkha regiments worldwide. This has led some English speakers to refer to it as a "Gurkha blade" or simply a "Gurkha knife." The khukuri frequently appears in Nepalese and Indian Gorkha heraldry and plays a significant role in various traditional rites, including wedding ceremonies.
