sketchfab
This model reveals a 1x1 meter excavation probe inserted into a large slag mound at Khirbat al-Jariya in modern-day Jordan. The ancient copper smelting site of Khirbat al-Jariya dates back to the Early Iron Age (around 1200-1000 BCE). Located in the Faynan region, this area is renowned for its rich copper ores that have been mined and smelted throughout history. Slag is a waste product from the copper smelting process, often accumulated in large mounds around smelting centers. This small excavation explored one of these slag mounds at the site during the 2014 excavation season of the Edom Lowlands Regional Archaeology Project (directed by Thomas E. Levy and Mohammad Najjar). Further Reading: Ben-Yosef E, et al. (2019) Ancient technology and punctuated change: Detecting the emergence of the Edomite Kingdom in the Southern Levant.
