Khat and Afnet Headdress

Another closely connected headdress is the khat or afnet, which complements the nemes perfectly. These two kerchiefs are often displayed together on object friezes as well as on pairs of royal wooden statues guarding the entrances to several New Kingdom royal tombs' burial chambers. The mummy of King Tut even had remnants of the khat, suggesting its strong symbolism in funerary contexts. Like the nemes, it's used to represent the royal ka, emphasizing its powerful significance. The name afnet is mentioned as early as the Pyramid Texts, where it's worn by the maternal Semat-cow associated with Nekhbet. The earliest certain representation of this headdress dates back to Djoser's reign, although it may also be found on an ivory label from King Den at Abydos, representing the khat.
