Kingdom Hearts is a series of crossover action role-playing games that centers around main character Sora as he searches for his friends and encounters Disney, Final Fantasy, and The World Ends With You characters in their worlds. Sora's journey begins when his world, Destiny Islands, is invaded by Heartless creatures, separating him from friends Riku and Kairi. In the invasion, Sora obtains a Keyblade that allows him to fight off the invading forces. He soon arrives in Traverse Town, where he meets Donald Duck and Goofy, two emissaries sent by King Mickey to find the wielder of the Keyblade. The three band together and travel to different Disney-themed worlds, sealing the hearts of these worlds to prevent more Heartless invasions and find Riku and Kairi along the way. They encounter a group of Disney villains led by Maleficent who are using the power of seven maidens called the "Princesses of Heart" to control the Heartless and capture their world. Defeating Maleficent, Sora, Donald, and Goofy discover that Ansem, Xehanort's Heartless, has taken control of Riku's body and plans to open Kingdom Hearts, bringing eternal darkness over all worlds. The trio defeats Ansem with help from King Mickey on the other side, sealing the door to Kingdom Hearts as Riku is freed. Kairi remains back home waiting for her friends' return, Sora continues his journey to find her and uncover more about Kingdom Hearts.
