Outdoor faucets often lose their plastic keys during the winter months. Next time this occurs, you can easily create a new one using a 3D printer. The key was printed in ABS plastic, which sometimes requires adjustment during printing, particularly under overhangs. We chose to create our own support structures as an experimental alternative to relying on MakerWare's default settings. This process was straightforward with netfabb Studio Basic, where we created flat box primitives and positioned them underneath the overhanging areas of the key model. We then intersected these supports with the key design. Creating custom supports is often a more desirable method for printing complex models, as it allows you to focus on supporting only the necessary overhangs. The bright green color was intentionally chosen to make the 3D printed key stand out in case it falls off and gets lost again.
