American artist Rose O'Neill, a native of the Midwest who had honed her skills as a writer and illustrator in New York City, first brought the Kewpie to life as a cartoon designed specifically for a comic strip in 1909. According to O'Neill herself, the concept for these lovable characters emerged from a vivid dream.
