Keszthely-Fenékpuszta on Lake Balaton's western shore is a prime archaeological site in Hungary, boasting immense historical significance from its Late Roman era roots through early Christian and antique traditions that thrived well into the 9th century AD. In the heart of the 4th century, a colossal fortification measuring 15 hectares sprouted up with an impressive array of 44 towers and imposing walls, encasing warehouses, baths, administrative offices, and grand representative buildings within its boundaries. Just south of this fortified complex lies an extensive necropolis, where burials took place from the very inception of the site through to the 9th century's close. Experts hypothesize that a resilient Roman community may have persisted in the region even after the Roman Age drew to a close, circa the middle of the 5th century AD. Assemblages from the mid-6th century and an early Christian basilica reveal the presence of a vibrant Christian community – aptly dubbed the Keszthely Culture by archaeologists.
