The first ogham stone ever recorded in this country stands as a testament to the region's rich history. A manuscript note penned by Edward Lhwyd around 1702-7 provides an account of this ancient relic (Brash 1879, 173). At that time, the stone proudly stood upright in a field near the shoreline at Trabeg, its presence a beacon to the surrounding landscape. By the early 19th century, however, the stone had taken on a new role, lying on the adjacent shore where it was repeatedly washed by the high tide (OSNB Dingle, 46). According to historical records, Macalister notes that it was temporarily removed to Chute Hall around 1849 but soon returned to its original site. Today, this significant ogham stone lies recumbent on a concrete base near the seashore, still bearing witness to its storied past despite being unassociated with any other notable monument.
