KayPro 16 Floppy Bay Cover
thingiverse
As a vintage computer aficionado, I take great delight in bringing functional parts back to life through 3D printing. Recently, I had the opportunity to breathe new life into my trusty KayPro 16 "portable" computer. Initially, I planned to install a floppy drive and leave it unconnected since this machine lacked a built-in floppy controller. However, finding a suitable 5.25-inch floppy drive proved to be a challenge. Despite trying various drives, they all seemed slightly too large, and I was hesitant to modify my cherished vintage hardware. In the end, I opted to utilize my limited 3D modeling skills in TinkerCAD. Having previously remixed expansion slot covers with ease, I decided to design a custom floppy drive holder using this software. I carefully measured each component, created a slender rectangle only two layers thick for initial testing, and on the second attempt, achieved a perfect fit. With confidence renewed, I completed the rest of the design in TinkerCAD, resulting in a flawless, functional holder that perfectly complements my KayPro 16.
