The Kawasaki Ki-61 Hien is renowned for being a powerful Japanese fighter aircraft of World War II employed by the Imperial Japanese Army Air Force. Eyewitness accounts initially mistaken the sleek new aircraft for Messerschmitt Bf 109s, prompting further scrutiny which revealed that this advanced plane was actually an Italian-designed creation, thus warranting its Allied reporting name, "Tony", given to it by the United States War Department. Internally, it held the Japanese Army designation of "Army Type 3 Fighter". Notably, the Ki-61 stood alone as Japan's only widely manufactured fighter during wartime to harness a liquid-cooled inline V engine, resulting in a total production run exceeding 3,000 units. Combat debut saw the first prototype planes deployed over Yokohama on April 18, 1942, amidst the pivotal Halsey-Doolittle Raid, and consistently conducted missions throughout the war period.
