Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson, born October 25, 1984, is an American singer-songwriter known as Katy Perry. She started singing in church during her childhood and later pursued a career in gospel music as a teenager. Her first album, released under her birth name in 2001 through Red Hill Records, wasn't successful commercially. In 2002, she moved to Los Angeles to transition into secular music and collaborated with producers Glen Ballard, Dr. Luke, and Max Martin. After adopting the stage name Katy Perry, she faced rejection from The Island Def Jam Music Group and Columbia Records before finally signing a recording contract with Capitol Records in April 2007.
