Thorvaldsen likely created the Seinsheim bust during his 1817-18 visit to Rome while accompanying Ludwig I of Bavaria. Uncertainty surrounds the true subject, however; some believe it may be a portrait of Count Gustav von Ingenheim rather than Seinsheim himself. Similarities with more recent depictions of Seinsheim exist, but the material used to create the bust remains unknown, including whether it was crafted from marble.
