Karin in Brixton Station, London

This striking piece of art was created by renowned artist Kevin Atherton in 1986, specifically for installation at Brixton station. Atherton's fascination with the fleeting connections people make in busy cities led him to craft these life-size bronze sculptures, which are designed to capture the moment when strangers lock eyes before parting ways. Strategically placed on each platform, the figures were positioned so that they gaze directly at one another, creating a sense of intimacy amidst the bustling atmosphere. Atherton meticulously observed how commuters interacted with the space, eventually selecting three individuals who embodied his vision: Peter Lloyd, Joy Battick, and Katin Heistermann. Interestingly, these sculptures are believed to be the first bronze depictions of black people in the UK, adding a layer of significance to Atherton's work. The artist's innovative approach involved casting each figure in sections within the ticket office, using plaster casts and actual clothing stiffened with resin as molds. The bronze finish was applied in thin layers, mimicking the texture of clothing, effectively blurring the lines between the figures' distinct backgrounds.
