Traveling in style and luxuriating in a comfortable yet mobile tent was a privilege reserved for the leader of the Onishali people. While tribal leaders and accomplished warriors were afforded brightly colored, cozy surroundings in their own tents, none were a match for the extravagance of the Queen’s tent. At the ceremony to name a new monarch, leaders from each clan would offer lavish gifts of pillows, cushions, textiles, and furnishings from their individual cultures. Some will find the adornments gaudy or garish, due to the wide-ranging mixtures of varied fashions, patterns, and styles of embroidery and brocade distinctive to each piece, but this eccentric styling is the signature of an accomplished leader.
