Kala drew inspiration from the courageous tale of Zintkala Nuni, who miraculously survived the devastating event at Wounded Knee River, where nearly five hundred native Americans fell victim to the brutal assault by the Seventh Cavalry. She was subsequently taken in and raised by a soldier.
