Kahōkūwelowelo Heiau (Site NP-1) sits proudly on the crest of a rugged pu‘u, situated on O‘ahu's north shore. From this lofty perch, it surveys the Kawailoa coastline and two adjacent traditional Hawaiian habitation sites, NP-2 and NP-3. Despite being severely altered by modern and historical modifications, the 75-meter-long site still retains remnants of its original layout: terraces, stacked walls, enclosures, and paved areas. These features offer valuable insights into how Kahōkūwelowelo Heiau was structured and utilized in ancient times. During World War II, the site underwent significant changes as it became part of a coastal defense network designed to safeguard O‘ahu from invasion. As part of this network, the Heiau provided crucial searchlight support for the Ashley artillery battery (located 1.6 kilometers northeast). The historic remains encompass three collapsed concrete bunkers and an intact searchlight controller booth, along with several stacked walls and excavated pits.
