In examining the laser locator ideas/concepts, I've determined that the cross hair principle was insufficient for my needs. The two line lasers mounted to an air assist required recalibration after removal for cleaning the focal lens, a task necessary every time the laser is used. Dual line lasers attached to the bracket holding the head eliminated this issue, but I found the lines' thickness not narrow enough as desired. Several concepts incorporating a combiner lens were reviewed; these lenses cost between $40 and 60 and are complex to set up and maintain. This design enables a standard red dot laser to be inserted into the laser path for initial location and slid out of the way when in operation. The advantages of this concept include: using the same focal lens as the CO2 laser provides exact location; passing the red dot laser through the focal lens narrows it to roughly the same size as the CO2 laser, resulting in pinpoint precision; and aiding in finding the focal point by visually locating the sweet spot. However, the drawbacks of this concept are: you cannot use the red dot laser during operation.
