The Russian Oscar II-class nuclear powered submarine K-141 Kursk was a highly capable vessel, able to carry 24 cruise missiles and 24 torpedoes. She served in the Northern Fleet for five years before tragically sinking during an exercise on August 2000, resulting in the loss of all hands. It was later discovered that she sank due to a series of explosions caused by hydrogen peroxide used as a propellant in old Soviet torpedoes, which then detonated kerosene and other armaments on board. The story of Kursk is tragic, but who wouldn't want a nuclear submarine on their desk? Submarines are fascinating vessels that operate like mysterious underwater predators, gliding calmly below the surface in total silence. They are hard to detect and can strike with deadly precision. I think submarines are interesting because they are complex machines that require a lot of expertise to operate. The Kursk was one of the first Russian submarines to be taken into service after the collapse of the Soviet Union, and it served for five years before its tragic sinking. Submarines like the Kursk have a lot of moving parts, including propellers, rudders, and ballast tanks. They also require a lot of power to operate, which can make them difficult to control. But with practice and experience, even a novice like me can learn how to handle one. I decided to participate in the #SubmarineChallenge by building a scale model of the Kursk using 3D printing. I chose this project because it would be challenging but rewarding, and it would also allow me to showcase my skills as a maker. The files for this project are available on Thingiverse under the name "K-141 Kursk Submarine". They include all the necessary parts to build a scale model of the submarine, including the hull, superstructure, and propellers. The model is designed to be printed in multiple pieces and assembled using glue and other adhesives. I hope that you find this project interesting and enjoyable to build. If you have any questions or need help with assembly, please don't hesitate to ask.
