Mammoth refers to any of the various extinct species belonging to the genus Mammuthus, a group within the proboscidean order that includes trunked mammals. Equipped with long, curved tusks and, in northern species, thick coats of hair, mammoths roamed the earth from around 5 million years ago during the Pliocene epoch into the Holocene era at approximately 4,000 years ago. Found on multiple continents including Africa, Europe, Asia, and North America, these massive creatures were members of the Elephantidae family, which also comprises modern elephants and their ancestors. A collection of fossil remains discovered in Condover, Shropshire features at least three juvenile mammoths, though they are significantly less complete than a fully grown male. The specimen was captured using a Canon 5DS R camera paired with a Stackshot 3x and turntable to generate 112 images that were subsequently processed using Agisoft Photoscan at high settings. This artifact is part of the Fossils in Shropshire collection.
