Since the 16th century, Lady Justice has frequently been shown wearing a blindfold symbolizing objectivity. The blindfold signifies that justice is or should be dispensed impartially, unswayed by influence, status, wealth, fame, power, or personal identity. Blind justice and impartiality have become synonymous with fair treatment since ancient Roman coins depicted Justitia holding a sword in one hand and scales in the other but without her eyes covered. It was not until the end of the 15th century that Justitia was commonly represented as blind.
