Jupiter Enthroned

This is a remarkably preserved copy of a Greek original dating back to the 3rd-1st Century BC. The colossal god stands proudly, holding his iconic attributes: a scepter and a thunderbolt. He towers over his mortal observers, exuding an aura of power and grandeur. The inspiration for this stunning image of Jupiter was a renowned Greek sculpture from the 430s B.C., the magnificent gold and ivory statue of Zeus created by the master sculptor Pheidias (active 470-420 B.C.) for Zeus's temple at Olympia. Pheidias's breathtaking Zeus was celebrated in ancient times; as one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, many ancient writers sang its praises, and numerous skilled sculptors carefully copied it.
