Have students design and print their own toy patent, create a marketing plan, and propose it to peers. Print Settings Printer Brand: MakerBot Printer: MakerBot Replicator 2 Rafts: Doesn't Matter Supports: Doesn't Matter Resolution: low Infill: 6 Notes: I put supports in for this pig, but depending on what they do, the print may not need supports. How I Designed This Students will design their own prototype to sell to their peers. I designed a hollow pig that can either be a bath toy or children's watering can. I originally thought of a piggy bank that "ate" coins. Students will plan out how the product will be used before printing, but sometimes more inspiration strikes as the product turns out differently than intended. I always use Tinkercad when teaching beginner 3D designs and recommend it to other educators. I process on Makerware software. Custom Section Project: Junior Shark Tank Overview & Background: Students will utilize multiple skills, including creative design, art, and economics in a realistic scenario perfect for problem-based learning. Objectives: Students will use their problem-solving skills, analyze a realistic problem, and create an economic proposal that will be presented to their peers. This lesson can be taught for critical thinking of realistic prototypes, understanding supply and demand, and persuasive writing. Audiences: This can be a group project that takes a few days to a week depending on how in-depth you'd like to go. Presentations can be made to class, panel, or teacher. Subjects: economics, math, business, writing, PBL Skills Learned (Standards): Common Core Math and English, Problem-Based Learning Lesson/Activity: Divide students into groups. I recommend 4 or less, but this can be larger or smaller depending on your class. Students must brainstorm a new toy/product meant for production. This should include 2D and 3D drafts before printing. Once a model has been successfully printed, the group should work on initial product line order, projected supply and demand, packaging aesthetics, and even marketing. Advanced lessons can include recording commercials. Groups present their marketing pitch to the audience, either peers, panel, or teacher. Feedback can be given. The group has the option to utilize feedback or submit the project as-is. Duration: This project can take multiple class periods depending on how in-depth you want the students to get. This should take a minimum of 4 45-minute classes: Planning, Designing, Marketing, Presentation Preparation: Students should have the ability to learn 3D design, if not learned already. Poster board may be needed for presentation. Video editing skills will be necessary if a commercial is required.
