Gaius Julius Caesar was a renowned Roman leader who served as a skilled general, effective statesman, and accomplished author of Latin prose. He played a pivotal role in the events that led to the downfall of the Roman Republic and the rise of the Roman Empire. In 60 BC, Caesar formed a powerful political alliance with Crassus and Pompey that dominated Roman politics for several years. Their attempts to amass power through populist tactics were strongly opposed by the conservative ruling class within the Roman Senate, who were often supported by Cato the Younger and Cicero. Caesar's victories in the Gallic Wars, completed by 51 BC, significantly expanded Rome's territory to the English Channel and the Rhine River. Caesar became the first Roman general to cross both when he built a bridge across the Rhine and led the first invasion of Britain. This magnificent marble sculpture is on permanent display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, crafted by Andrea di Pietro di Marco Ferrucci (1465 - 1526) around 1512-14.
