Gaius Julius Caesar was a Roman leader who made significant contributions to politics, military conquests, and literature in Latin. His actions led directly to the downfall of the Roman Republic and the emergence of the Roman Empire. In 60 BC, Caesar joined forces with Crassus and Pompey to form an influential alliance that shaped Roman politics for several years. Their efforts to gain power through popular support were met with resistance from conservative members of the Roman Senate, particularly Cato the Younger, who often collaborated with Cicero. Caesar's military triumphs in the Gallic Wars, completed by 51 BC, expanded Rome's territory to the English Channel and the Rhine. He became the first Roman general to cross both waterways when he built a bridge across the Rhine and led the initial invasion of Britain.
